The Seasons, They Change
Now is my favorite time of year in Arizona. The days are pleasantly warm at 80-90 degrees (actually quite pleasant and comfortable at such low humidity—I’m currently wearing a sweatshirt and it’s 83 out), and the nights are cool at about 50 degrees. Great sleeping weather!
I doubt it’s coincidence that last year at this time, I decided I didn’t want to leave Arizona.
At this time every year, the RV Resort empties out and all my friends leave. Snowbird resorts are a bit like summer camp, in that there’s a ton of socializing and activities during the winter and you get really close to people.
And then everyone cries when they go home. (Or I cry and stay here.)
But seasons change, and they’ll be back next winter—which is FOREVER away.
I SAW MY FIRST GECKO OF THE YEAR!!!!!!
Last year, I managed to spend ALL SUMMER looking for a snake in the REPTILE CAPITAL OF THE UNITED STATES, and I didn’t see a single one. I am determined to see one this year, even if I have to go hiking in Rattlesnake Canyon.
I’m just hoping not to get bit by one. ![]()
It’s strange how I’ve settled into a new yearly rhythm, after being enmeshed in the school-year rhythm for most of my life.
When I was a teacher, the year began in late August. Apparently some of my friends think it begins in January. I now think it begins in December, when the snowbirds return.
When does your year begin? And when is your favorite season?

Natasha Fondren is a writer traveling the U.S. in a camper with her four cats. She is currently enjoying the lizards and desert heat in Arizona.
My year begins when the snow, ice and cold recede enough for me to get the cat out again! Not that anything changes much except that it makes it easier to get chores done.
Around here we look out for the first robins of spring. Looking uot for geckos would be much more interesting. Or at least different.
The cat out again? LOL!
Nice! I love the first robins. But the first geckos are cooler… but only because searching for the first geckos is new to me.
I’m so happy for you. Life sounds so nice and calm. I could use a snake seeking hike right about now. Instead I’m going to Boston to see my family. I hope I can find time to see my friend Margie at least a little.
The year definitely begins in September for me. I’m on the kids’ school schedule for my own nitwits, and the ones at work. I don’t see it ever changing, and that’s okay. The leaves change and the year begins.
LOL! I’m with you, Robin! I still look at the calendar and think, “OMG! Guild auditions are soon! Spring Recital!” And then I take a deep breath and relax.
I hope everyone’s healthy in Boston!
I actually miss the school year for just that reason. I feel like I have no real break from one season or day to the next.
I work at a university so, in part, I almost vicariously enjoy summer, but I am still here working when the students are off playing. I wish I did have something to help delineate a year break that wasn’t a ball dropping.
I drop things all the time and it doesn’t start anything good.
That is sort of the worst of both worlds, Brandon! Sheesh! You get to watch everyone go have fun for the summer, and you’re stuck working.
And LOL!
Unfortuantely, the humidity has already started to get out of hand here. Very sweltering in the afternoon when the sun is out.
Oooh, yuck, Charles! That sounds awful!
My favorite time is spring.all the trees blossom. The fllowers start coming out and the people start coming out from there hiding places.People playing mucic on the streets and in the parks.I play clarinet and Freddy plays the guitar. Then just like you all my friends come back for the summer mostly a lot from Tuzson with there home made jewelry from all the diferent stones they have collected and they do good. Then in the winter they go back and I wish I was going.I have decided this is going to be my last winter here.I don”t know where I”m going but know more snow. HAPPY EASTER TO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND11111
