What’s Going On?

Glenn’s coming home! I’ve been sitting by the phone. I probably won’t know which day until he’s flown to Anchorage, given the difficulty of phoning from Dutch Harbor. It could be any day (or really, any hour) now.

Good news: Bernita has a new Lillie St. Claire story in Weirdly: Volume 3. Lillie rocks, I’m telling you, totally rocks.

Smart Pop Books has released excerpts of Ardeur, an essay anthology about Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series. There are some great essays in there! Mine is “The Domestication of a Vampire Executioner.”

Laurell K. Hamilton guest-edited, and she wrote really awesome and heartfelt intros to each essay. Lots of times, editors write a paragraph, a couple sentences. She wrote a page or two. I have to say, her success is not surprising; the extra mile must be automatic with her.

Speaking of Smart Pop Books, if you’re a fan of Dollhouse, they’re having an essay contest for the Dollhouse anthology.

So I mentioned I’m learning Spanish. The Listen ‘n’ Learn Spanish with the Movies book assigned Eight Below first. Um, YEAH RIGHT. I sobbed the whole way through. And I’m not watching it again, no way no how. I don’t care if I haven’t learned the Spanish I’m supposed to learn from it.

I’m an emotional weakling. The whole time, I knew there was going to be a happy ending for the dogs, but that didn’t help. Nor did the actual happy ending: I sobbed through that, too.

I cry at everything in real life, too. I saw a mean sign a few days ago, and I came home and cried. I was depressed for three days. I felt like running home to a mommy and saying, “He hurt my feelings!”

I have the emotional strength of a five year old. *sigh*

*Addendum: He just called! He’s already to Anchorage; he’ll be here at 11:45 am, Friday morning!

What’s going on with you?

I’m so excited that he’s coming home to you!! Yay!!

And BTW: I cry at everything in real life too AND things affect me for days.

  • Bernita says:

    Going on with me?
Revisions and revisions and more revisions.
So kind of you to mention my story. Thank you.
Congratulation on the critical piece! You rock yourself!
There’s a world of emotion in the simple words “he’s coming home…”
We are both women of easy tears.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Oh nice, Bernita! I wish I were in revision stage. :-)

So true. You get it. And it comforts me that you call yourself a woman of easy tears, because you seem to be one of the strongest women I know.

  • Sometimes, I feel like crying, too, over the strangest things.

Don’t give up on the Spanish, amiga!

Glad your hubby will be making it back home soon!

    • Natasha Fondren says:

I’m working hard, Jewel! I do flashcards in the morning, Fluenz in the afternoon, and Spanish movies in the evening.

  • writtenwyrdd says:

Great news! It’s hard to be apart from one’s sweetie like that.

Being emotional doesn’t make you five, though. It might make you feel awkward sometimes, but it’s far better to know how you feel than to be totally closed off from your feelings.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

If he heals quickly, he might have to go back for a week or two or three, but I think this is it for him.

      That’s true, Written. That’s true.

  • that’s cool about the piece in the Hamilton book, and nice that she too the time to write intros for all. Congrats.

  • Edie says:

OMG! I’m glad for you that Glenn is coming home. I just read the beginning paragraphs of your essay, and it’s great! You make me want to read more.

Being emotional makes you a better writer. You can empathize with your characters as you torture them.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Thanks, Edie! I can’t wait until her next book.

This is a good point. I think you’re right: it does make one a better writer.

  • Melanie says:

That’s so great he’s almost home! I hope things come together for you.

  • Congrats on the essay and the cool author intro! Is this a book you’ll let me buy? ;) Can’t wait to read in it’s entirety.

  • Robin Altman says:

Yay! He must be there by now! I’m hoping the two of you are cuddling and contemplating breakfast.

I couldn’t take Eight Below, either. We saw Precious last night. Warning: don’t see this movie. If Eight Below bothers you, this is guaranteed to make you insane.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Robin, I did see Precious! Oh wait, no I didn’t. LOL. I have a terrible memory. I did read the book, and saw the trailer so many times I got temporarily confused. The book made me cry. :-(

He’s so not in cuddle mode. His back hurts too much. In bed, all night, he wakes up every time I move a toe and yells, “Don’t hit my back!”

  • Robin Altman says:

Oh! And congratulations on your essay! I can’t wait to read it! I loved your essay on the Evanovich books!

  • Erin says:

I’m glad Glenn made it home. I saw on your FB that the wound is really bad. I hope it gets better. Do they know what it is?

I LOVE Dollhouse. I’m so sad it’s over. I cried a little during the finale. A friend warned me that Joss Whedon is known for killing off main characters in the finale, but it was still sad.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

His medical records say “cellulitis,” although I’m still not completely sure what caused it. One doctor thinks a spider bite on the boat; he said he could see the fangs! (Is that possible?!)

Awwww! I was bummed that the one guy became a bad guy and then died. That was sad; I liked him!

  • Yay! He’s coming home!!!! And congrats!
Go buy a lottery ticket…the stars are alined!
I cry over all that stuff too. I never did before I had kids. They turned me into emotional marshmellows.
    I won’t watch 8 Below….I’d be a mess.

  • Eric Mayer says:

No excitement here. Just waiting for a cold spell to end.
