Nothing in YA is Overdone.

image Whoever says that Vampire Young Adult fiction is overdone, is wrong. In general, the YA section is VERY SMALL. Too small. I’m not reading anything but young adult fiction and graphic novels until I finish my YA novel, and I’m quickly running out of things to read.

Mostly because I like dark, which means I stick mostly to gothic or paranormal.

Last night, I woke up at 3:30 am, and couldn’t go back to sleep, so I finished Swoon by Nina Malkin. I was impressed, because it was one of the few unhappy endings I’ve ever read that I’ve been satisfied with. And I can probably count them on… well, right now, I can only think of one: Swoon.

I loved Fallen, by Lauren Kate, and Prophecy of the Sisters, by Michelle Zink, but both are merely beginnings; in YA, there’s apparently less pressure to make each book in a series a stand-alone.

Which I think is a good thing.

I really want to read Christopher Pike’s Thirst series, but it’s not available on ebook. (Phooey.) Remember Christopher Pike? When I was growing up, I loved his teen horror books. I thought it was awesome to see his books out there.

I’ll wait until it comes out in ebook, though. Hopefully they’ll publicize it so I remember about it.

image I’m behind on my book-a-day thing. I once wanted to catch up, but frankly, that would be an expensive endeavor. I talk like I can’t afford books, but it’s really that I can’t afford as many books as I read. We spend a lot on ebooks. I’m glad we don’t pay for internet or cable; all that money goes towards books. Many months, it’s “and then some.”

At least they’re all write-offable.

And finally, Random House has just shot to the top of the list as my favorite NY publisher. We all have things that are important to us, and to me, pricing and availability of ebooks is way up at #1. No, don’t tell me their boilerplate digital royalty rate, because that’s #2.

Can your wallet keep up with your reading pace? What are you reading, lately? Any particular genre? Ever run out of precisely what you’re in the mood for?

I wish my favorite writers would write faster. Other than that, it seems like all the good books come at the same time, and in between them I have a reading drought. I think I’m due for a flood of great books about now. :)

  • G says:

I just started reading romance, specifically, inter-racial romances (don’t ask why, because I’m saving that explanation for a stand alone blog post some day).

It has been interesting to say the least, although so far, I have not gotten any odd looks from people.

But if you’re looking for something new, when you’re done with your latest, check Erica Kennedy’s latest called “Fashionista”. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in ten hours, spread out over two days.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

I’ll look for your blog post, G! I’ll check out Erica Kennedy. Wow! That’s saying something! It sounds much better than its title!

  • Melanie says:

I was all geared up to keep reading more YA but now that I want to work on my women’s fiction edits I feel like I should stick with that genre. I don’t know… I can’t wait until I have total access to books!

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Awww! Yeah, that will be GREAT! If you end up working in a bookstore, I’m going to be so jealous! (And happy for you! Jealous in a good way. Jealous in a way where I’ll want every single detail!)

I do NOT like reading books on screen, although I have a few on the laptop. I don’t plan on getting an ebook reader, although I might some day. I just like actual books. (I can understand your issues re space and etc., though.) so for me a publisher makes me happy by gracing the world with great books. And lots of them, lol.

I have a wide variety of books (hell, I just have a lot of books, probably over 1200) and I keep buying more. I have whatever variety I hunger for, but I admit that, when I want a particular type of book, I generally go pull out a book I read previously and reread it. I hunger for books I’ve loved and which put me in a place that I want to reexperience.

One of the downsides to my book addiction (YES, it really is an addiction for me) is that I don’t have enough time to reread books I love. So I’m going on a book buying hiatus for a while. Possibly most of this year.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

A publisher makes me happy by gracing the world with great books, too, LOL. I just read them in ebook form, not hardcover. :-)

I hear you! I could buy a million books. Boy, I love books!

I really mourn that I can’t re-read more books. There’s just so many books to read! I never catch up!

  • I have the 2 Christopher Pike sets in print. Read a snippet of the first story and I love the writing. Can’t wait to get to a point where I can read straight through. Maybe this summer. Want to read The Vampire Diairies, too, but may wait until the series wraps. I can’t decide.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Really, Heather?! Wow! That’s cool! I haven’t tried Vampire Diaries, either. I don’t know why. It looks good!

  • I just started a purposeful Military SF kick. I love all the military sf stories I get at Electric Spec and figured I’d like it in novels too. So I’ve started with ARMOR. It’s pretty good, but I’m waiting for it to change POVs cuz I think it’ll get really good then. :)

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Oh cool, Betsy! I was on one of those kicks ages ago. Gosh, I used to read so much SF. I’m not sure what happened, honestly.

  • Oh, and I’m reading some slash. Okay, laugh, but I found a beautifully written story last night.

Of course I’ve lost the link since…

  • Eric Mayer says:

Since I mostly read (and prefer) old stuff, and like reading off the screen, I get most of my books for free off the Internet. I have a hard time even deciding what genre to read and jump all over the place. Which means I can find endless old books that suit me fine. If I had to buy all my books brand new I would be up the creek without a book!

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Eric, I hear you! Oh gosh, you’d love having an ebook! Have you been to Feedbooks.com? I love that site. All free!

  • Bernita says:

I’m running out of space, not pace, but it’s a hunger for moremoremore of the authors I like.

  • I agree. No matter the genre, there is always room for more good ones, just not copycats. I think teens, as most people, stick to the same genre (for the most part).

  • Can your wallet keep up with your reading pace?
Sadly, no. I’ve had to slow down the reading since my wallet can’t take it and my library doesn’t always have much of what I’d like. :(

What are you reading, lately? Any particular genre?
For whatever reason, I love YA. (arrested development? :) You might like “Wicked Lovely” by Melissa Marr if you haven’t read it yet.

Ever run out of precisely what you’re in the mood for?
Sadly, yes. Happens all the time.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Kate, I had to not read the past two days, too, Kate. I’m at Borders now, so hopefully I can squeeze in a book between research.

I love YA too! I don’t know why. I do have that on my list! (Actually, it’s sitting right here beside me. I’m in the bookstore now. :-)

  • Robin Altman says:

You changed my life with your Kindle recommendation. The piles of books everywhere are gone. I only wish you could lend to people outside your account on the Kindle.

  • Rick says:

I only read your posts, Natasha, and since they are affordably priced, I can keep up with the cost quite nicely!

Seriously, coming here is better than reading the newspaper. You write about interesting things that make me think.

So, my new motto is that I’m only reading books in between your posts.

    • Natasha Fondren says:

Rick! LOL! You’re so silly! My posts. Hah! I’m feeling very boring, lately. I can’t tell you how many posts I delete!
